National Homeownership Month 2012
Homeownership has long been the cornerstone of the American Dream. It provides more than shelter for your family and a home for your most valuable treasures. Homeownership is a symbol of prosperity that is achieved by more Americans each year with the help of innovative builders, improvements in the access to capital, and the myriad of government and industry programs developed to help make homeownership a reality.
Each June, during National Homeownership Month, Americans have the opportunity to reflect on how homeownership has enhanced our lives and contributed to the thriving communities we call home. Home builders continue to work with housing finance innovators, consumer education organizations and government officials to advance and protect affordable homeownership opportunities in our country.
Habitat for Humanity is one of the most highly regarded nonprofits that works with the housing industry to help a greater number of individuals become homeowners.
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped over 500,000 people find decent and affordable housing through an efficientprogram that uses volunteer labor and donations to construct or rehabilitate houses. Homeowners are chosen to take part in Habitat based on an application that analyzes individual family needs and their willingness to become involved with the organization. If they are selected, they must invest a down payment, monthly mortgage payments, and hundreds of individual labor in order to make their dream of homeownership a reality. Mortgage payments are also partially invested into the development of new Habitat homes in order to help the organization flourish and grow.
Join the National Association of Home Builders, Athens Area Habitat for Humanity and homebuilders nationwide in recognizing homeownership month during June.
