Join the Committee of 1000 today!

Every year in January, there’s a very special party held in

Athens, GA, with music and great food and hundreds of interesting people who are all building

a house, in which none of them will live.

This party, hosted by Athens Area Habitat for Humanity and the guest list which changes each

year is called the Committee of 1000. Each member buys at least one “seat” on the committee

for $67, and with just one thousand seats sold, Habitat can build a brand new 3 bedroom house

“It’s a kind of local, old fashioned version of crowdsourcing,” says executive director Spencer

Frye. “To be part of building a family’s first home, plus an invitation to one of the most

interesting gatherings of people in Athens, for just $67, it’s an incredible opportunity.”

For Frye and other at Athens Area Habitat, building homes isn’t just a job, it’s a mission. “I can’t

think of any donation that gives as much satisfaction as putting families into homes, “says Frye.

“Sometimes folks have no idea where their charitable donations go or what they do, but our

Habitat donors can actually point to homes in our community that they helped build, and

there’s no better feeling than that.”

By working with donors and volunteers, and with proceeds from the 2 Habitat ReStores in

Athens, a new house costs just $67,000 to build. This home will then be purchased by a

qualifying local family at no interest, and 100%of the mortgage payments will go to fund future

Corporate seats are also available. According to Frye, businesses typically contribute much

more than individuals, so their participation is critical. “It would be much harder to make this

program work without them,” Frye notes, “but we have a wonderful businesses community

here with a very generous spirit, organizations that genuinely care about the town and the

region and work hard to improve it.

Consider joining this year’s Committee of 1000 and help Athens Area Habitat for Humanity change the World one block at a time.
