How do I apply for a house?

If you meet all three requirements listed below, complete the following steps to apply for a house.
  1. Use our online Qualification Wizard

Review the qualifications listed below and complete a short series of yes or no questions to determine if you qualify to apply for a Habitat Home in Clarke, Oconee, or Oglethorpe county.

    Use our online Qualification Wizard.

  2. Pick up an Application

Come by our office, located at 532 Barber Street in Athens, and pick up an application or Download a PDF version online.

  3. Complete and Return

Fill it out completely, come by our office in person to return it to us or mail it to the address shown on the application, and you will be considered in the next family selection process. Please do not e-mail a completed application to AAHFH. E-mailed applications will not be accepted/considered for review.
Note: Completing an application with AAHFH does not guarantee that you will be qualified for Habitat housing. This is just the first step in a process that could take 4 - 6 months. If you have any questions, please feel call us at (706)208-1001.
Athens Area Habitat for Humanity will notify you if you are selected.

Do I qualify for a Habitat house?

If you meet the following three requirements you are eligible for a Habitat house:
  1. Need for a house

If your current living situation is poor, and you need a simple decent place to live, Habitat may be able to help you. Examples of poor living situations include leaky roofs, no heat, too little space for your family to live comfortably, etc. If this sounds like you, check the following two requirements to see if you qualify.

  2. Ability to Pay

As Habitat is not a give away program, homeowners must be able to pay a low monthly mortgage payment. In 2004, a three-bedroom Habitat house costs about $62,000. A four-bedroom house costs about $64,000. We offer a 25-year mortgage, making the monthly payments for a three-bedroom house $200.00 and a four-bedroom house $213.00 (excluding escrow for taxes and insurance). You also must fall within the ranges set by Athens Habitat's Income Guidelines (listed below).

  3. Sweat Equity

For the homeowner, partnership requires 500 hours of "sweat equity." 200 hours must be completed before Habitat will begin construction on the homeowner's house. This 200 hours can be completed by doing a number of tasks including working on the homes of other Habitat families, helping in the Habitat thrift store, working in the Habitat office, helping with other special Habitat projects/events. Knowing how to do construction or having experience in construction is not necessary. Once a homeowner completes 200 hours, construction can begin on his/her house. The homeowner can complete the remaining 300 hours working on his/her own house and/or continuing to work in the ways listed above.
